How Does Your Work Enable You to Connect to and Fulfill Your Life Purpose/Passion?
I spent the first part of my adult life teaching grades 6-12, undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as coaching teachers as a literacy coach. I was certain that my life’s work and purpose would always be in education, literacy, and social justice. And then, life sometimes offers you new experiences and opportunities to choose a different route. While I’m newer to the fitness and nutrition industry, I’m just as passionate about it and eager to learn all I can just like I was about education. So while my passion has shifted from education to fitness and nutrition, the purpose is still the same — to help others. Help people learn about nutrition and fitness, and guide them on their own wellness journey to help them achieve their goals. And, similar to education where there is so much to be learned from those we teach, there is much to glean from my clients’ experiences and lives.
Who Is Your Ideal Client and Why?
Women who want to improve and enhance their health and wellness. Why? I’ve come to understand how much the right nutrition and movement can change and enrich a person’s life. I never knew what my body was capable of until my late 40s when I began my own wellness and fitness journey. I want to share my passion, pass along my learnings, and make nutrition/fitness accessible and easy to implement for all women.
What Unique Offerings Do You Provide?
Online and in-person nutrition and fitness coaching. I offer a few options for fitness coaching. One option is to work out with me at my studio in my home, which has a plethora of fitness equipment to meet the varying needs of all athletes. Another option is to take a workout that I’ve written specifically for you and perform the workout at your gym or at home. The third fitness option is to come to your home and workout together there. In addition to providing clients lots of support while they make habit changes to their nutrition, I offer grocery store visits. What does that mean? Together, we will visit a grocery store and go shopping. You might be wondering, “how hard can it be to navigate a grocery store?” You might be surprised. Before digging into nutrition, I had no idea how to really evaluate labels and even knew less about supermarkets, how they’re designed and why, and how to navigate all the different products available to us.
Who Was Your Role Model Growing Up? How Did That Person’s Actions Impact You?
Billy Jean King. She was a major force and trailblazer for women in so many ways. It wasn’t so much about the tennis for me, as it was about her inner strength and confidence that made such an impression on me as a very young girl. She balanced grace, intelligence, and drive in a way that not many others have been able to repeat. In addition to breaking barriers for women, she has changed the lives of many with her passion for social justice and achieving gender equality. “You have to see it to be it.” – BJK
Favorite Place to Escape and Refuel?
The ocean. The smells, the sounds, the feel.
Top 3 Ways to Treat Yourself to Self-Care?
Eucalyptus epsom salt baths, massage, compression boots.
How Do You Express Yourself Creatively?
Making moves of the week videos, blogging about fitness, nutrition, and wellness, as well as making cupcakes. I have about 14 flavors I’ve mastered. I’ve baked cupcakes for showers, choral shows, birthdays, graduation parties, and more.
Last Memorable Book You Read and Why?
ROAR: How to Match Your Food and Fitness to Your Unique Female Physiology for Optimum Performance, Great Health, and a Strong, Lean Body for Life by Stacy Sims. There is so much in this book for all women of any age to glean from this book, whether you’re training for an event or play recreational tennis or take yoga. One of her messages that stayed with me: We are not small men and thus we need to train, feed, and nurture our bodies differently from men.
Favorite Movie and Why?
Cinema Paradiso. It was one of the first foreign films I saw and it spring boarded me into a fascination and love for foreign films in my 20s.
“Go to” Quote or Mantra that Grounds You?
“If you have a body, you’re an athlete” – Bill Bowerman
Accomplishment Are You Most Proud of?
My first inclination is to say earning my doctorate in Educational Leadership, because that was simply a marathon of a process to go through. But I think I’m most proud of the way I have redefined and and recreated myself since earning that degree. The degree itself took a toll on my life and health because it’s such a huge commitment of time (and energy). So yes, I’m committing to saying reclaiming my health and wellness — and venturing out of education and into the fitness and nutrition business to help people on their own journeys — is what I’m most proud of.
Best Lesson Learned in Life So Far?
No matter what our age, we have the ability to redefine and recreate ourselves. As I mentioned earlier, I thought I would be a “lifer” in education — I was that person who could never imagine doing anything else. And as fulfilling as it was to watch kids fall in love with reading or assist a teacher with a strategy for a particular students’ success, there was something else out in the world for me to find. A new passion, and a new purpose.
Advice to Younger Self?
Confidence and a belief in myself was definitely something that I lacked when I was younger. I would tell my younger me to trust my abilities and intelligence, that they would indeed help me navigate the obstacles of life.
What Do You Love Best About Yourself (physical trait or personality characteristic) and Why?
My never-ending lust for learning.
