Top 3 Ways to Treat Yourself to Self-Care?

Yoga. Running and Cooking.

Heart of the Story Editorial & Coaching Services

How Does Your Work Enable You to Connect to and Fulfill Your Life Purpose/Passion?

I’ve been writing ever since I learned how to hold a crayon. It’s not just a hobby – it’s a way in which I want to contribute to society. On top of all that, I enjoy helping other writers improve on their craft and write compelling, memorable stories that only they can tell.

Who Is Your Ideal Client and Why?

Writers! To be more specific, writers who have a passion for their craft and are fully committed to ensuring their stories, poems, and other projects are soundly constructed, smoothly written, and error-free, and to becoming a more confident and creative version of themselves.

What Unique Offerings Do You Provide?

Right now, my services include a variety of editing and literary coaching packages. In terms of editing, I do manuscript critiques, developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and proofreading. (All of these terms are explained at the Heart of the Story website.) My specialty genres are fantasy, magical realism / speculative fiction, YA, and literary fiction. However, I’m happy to consider other genres if the project seems like a good fit. And with literary coaching, I offer guidance on the novel-writing process, blogging, time management, project clarity, and much more. So in that way, I’m also a cheerleader and accountability partner. In the near future, I’m planning to offer poetry workshops in the Boston area as well as website copy writing / editing packages to authors and entrepreneurs.

Who Was Your Role Model Growing Up? How Did That Person’s Actions Impact You?

Growing up, most of my role models were authors and other writers. When I was in middle and high school, I loved reading books by Scott O’Dell, Ann M. Martin (Baby-Sitters Club series), and K.A. Applegate, as well as Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries. Then I started reading fantasy literature and poetry in college, so my literary heroes and heroines at that point were J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, and Mary Oliver. I also listened to music constantly when I was younger (I still do now, actually) and paid close attention to lyrics and whether the artist wrote / composed their own songs. In particular, I found a lot of comfort and artistry in Darren Hayes’s lyrics for Savage Garden songs like “To the Moon & Back” and “Crash and Burn.” Altogether, I think these and other writers and artists have influenced me to follow my own creative path and to embrace my talents.

Favorite Place to Escape and Refuel?

Anyplace with a water view, especially the beaches of Cape Cod. I also went to Iceland for the second time recently and absolutely love the natural beauty there.

Top 3 Ways to Treat Yourself to Self-Care?

Meditation, journaling / writing poetry, and aromatherapy. I also find Reiki and mandala coloring to be very therapeutic.

How Do You Express Yourself Creatively?

I write poetry and have had the privilege of having several poems published in online and print journals. I’ve also written blog articles on the craft of writing for several websites, and I have a regular column at DIY MFA that focuses on literary themes.

Last Memorable Book You Read and Why?

I recently finished On the Come Up by Angie Thomas. It’s a YA contemporary about a teenage rapper who finds herself in the center of a controversy when her first recorded song goes viral. So it’s an homage to the author’s favorite music genre (hip hop) and a story about fighting for your dreams, being who you are (and not what others want you to be), and the power and consequences of free speech. And like Angie Thomas’s first novel, The Hate U Give, it focuses on one black teenager’s experience with all of the above and sheds light on how racism is still impacting blacks in America today.

Favorite Movie and Why?

I could watch the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies over and over again and not get tired of them. The final HP film in particular brings me to tears every time.

“Go to” Quote or Mantra that Grounds You?

Every night, before I go to bed, I complete this sentence: “Today, I’m grateful for [fill in the blank].” It reminds me that, no matter how trying the day was, there’s always something to be happy about or thankful for. It’s a practice I’ve been doing for 6 or 7 years now, and my life has changed so much for the better because of it.

Accomplishment Are You Most Proud of?

I don’t know if I can list just one! I’m proud of launching Heart of the Story. I’m proud of my poems and how I’ve grown as a poet. I’m also proud of how I’ve grown personally over the past few years. I still have a lot to learn, accomplish, and experience. But I’m also braver, wiser, and more mindful than I was 3 or 4 years ago.

Best Lesson Learned in Life So Far?

Don’t be afraid of following your heart. Sometimes that’s the best compass to use.

Advice to Younger Self?

Sometimes people might not understand why you do what you do – and that’s OK. Don’t define your life by trying to make others happy. Put your own happiness first.

What Do You Love Best About Yourself (physical trait or personality characteristic) and Why?

I love my appreciation of nature and the simple things in life. I also love how brave I’ve become over the past couple years. I used to not pursue things I wanted to do because I was scared that I’d fail or something bad would happen to me, or because I was afraid of what other people would think. Now I know to push past that fear regardless.

Any Advice for Women Considering Joining the SheBreathes Collaborative?

I’ve only been a member for a couple months, but I already love this community. It’s so warm, welcoming, and supportive; and I really appreciate the focus on mindfulness, wellness, and empowerment. Everyone wants to see one another succeed with their business, projects, and goals. If you live in the Walpole area, and if this sounds like a group you want to be part of, then what are you waiting for? 🙂

Any Message You Have for Our Community?

Thank you so much for the warm welcome! I’m looking forward to becoming more involved with the SheBreathes community and helping writers further develop their talents – and learning from everyone I connect with as a result.

Life Coaching Magic

How Does Your Work Enable You to Connect to and Fulfill Your Life Purpose/Passion?

I make a profound difference in peoples’ lives – typically in just a few sessions. People are typically their own biggest obstacle to what they want in life. I love impacting the world, one person at a time. I help people bring their dreams to earth while they are still here to enjoy them! So unless they believe in reincarnation they can live the life they choose now instead of being trapped in the life that chose them… I’ve studied personal growth for 49 years and believe this should taught in schools. I was also a management consultant and my problem solving is my super power so I often help people come up with creative solutions.

Who Is Your Ideal Client and Why?

My ideal client tends to give more than they get in relationships. I help them honor who they are, speak up in a way that others can hear them.

What Unique Offerings Do You Provide?

I give 1:1 coaching in communication and relationships. I offer a free 30-minute coaching session. I can coach either in person or by phone. I write up our session so that the client and I both have the information we covered which is often helpful later. I have helped clients with a variety of issues including: self-confidence, decision-making, speaking up, quieting the critical voice in their head, re-framing childhood experiences that can trigger feelings of low self-worth, weight loss, etc.

Who Was Your Role Model Growing Up? How Did That Person’s Actions Impact You?

John F. Kennedy. I generalized his quote and made it my own: “Ask not what others can do for you. Ask what you can do for others.” I rejoice in people discovering a life they love – however, I do that after I feel fulfilled first – which is the most important way to be. (Put on your own oxygen mask before you help others.)

Favorite Place to Escape and Refuel?

Dancing – particularly west coast swing.

Top 3 Ways to Treat Yourself to Self-Care?

Animals (particularly dogs), seeing beauty in nature and going for walks.

How Do You Express Yourself Creatively?

I love to create – I enjoy writing and drawing. I’ve also choreographed musicals and written a few songs.

Last Memorable Book You Read and Why?

Love Warrior – She was so vulnerable.

Favorite Movie and Why?

Speed – pure adrenalin rush + hot star.

“Go to” Quote or Mantra that Grounds You?

Be here now. (We have a tendency to think about a lot and forget where we are.)

Accomplishment Are You Most Proud of?

My writing. My first book “Life’s Magic Carousel: How to Grab the Brass Ring Before the Music Stops.” It describes how to have a great life in an entertaining manner. It will be published this summer and I am excited people will be able to easily make changes in their lives. I’ve also written 13 articles for GoodMenProject (what it means to be a good man today). Last year I published a story “My Fearless Five-Year-Old Self” in a collection of 42 stories for women by women in a book called “If Only I Knew Then What I Know Now.” Two other short stories will be published this year: “My Suddenly Grateful Self” and “Ferret Shenanigans or Simply Odd?”

Best Lesson Learned in Life So Far?

You are perfect and brilliant just as you are – love, accept and trust yourself! No apologies. No wishing for a different body, mind, circumstances, etc. Take what you have and run with it!

Advice to Younger Self?

Worry less about what others’ opinions of you and what they think you should do. Just appreciate your strengths.

What Do You Love Best About Yourself (physical trait or personality characteristic) and Why?

I am quirky, quick-witted and love to entertain! I used to try to fit in. But then I realized that the best thing about me is that I am unique.

Join! What a wonderful supportive, connecting group of business women.

Let’s Change Talk.

How Does Your Work Enable You to Connect to and Fulfill Your Life Purpose/Passion?

My life feels most valuable when I’m providing others with hope and helping them discover their purpose.

Who Is Your Ideal Client and Why?

My ideal client is someone who wants more out of their life, someone who realizes they have unused potential and they’re willing to work hard to uncover and cultivate it. This is because I would’ve described myself as this person 10 years ago and I remember looking around for someone to guide me. I want to be the person I needed as a young adult.

What Unique Offerings Do You Provide?

I provide coaching heavily based on Motivational Interviewing. I learned this incredible way to communicate that creates a safe space for clients to open up, without judgement. My listening skills are sharp and I take pride in my ability to pick up on my client’s nonverbal cues and gestures which really allows us to connect. Having a long-time background in Physical Therapy, I’m also confident in my ability to create safe and effective exercise programs for my clients.

Who Was Your Role Model Growing Up? How Did That Person’s Actions Impact You?

My role model growing up (and to this day) is my big brother Dan. He is the most hard-working, generous, philanthropic man I’ve ever known. He taught me at a young age how to be independent and not to be afraid of hard work. He continues to teach me dedication and resilience. One of the most commendable things I think of about Dan is his college experience. Dan joined the Marine Corps on his 18th birthday and began taking college classes while serving our country. His schooling would often be put on hold when he’d get sent on deployment after deployment after deployment. It took him 10 years to get his Bachelor’s Degree, for that reason. But he persevered and it was such a proud moment to see him walk across the stage with his diploma. Whenever I’m having a hard day I know I can count of him for a motivational speech, or a kick in the ass!

Favorite Place to Escape and Refuel?

The beach! It provides me with serenity and perspective.

Top 3 Ways to Treat Yourself to Self-Care?

Weightlifting. Reading. Meditating.

How Do You Express Yourself Creatively?

I’m most creative when I write/journal and cook.

Last Memorable Book You Read and Why?

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. Before I read this book I didn’t realize how much shame impacted my life. It gave me a new perspective and some strategies to living a whole hearted life. I would highly recommend it!

Favorite Movie and Why?

Ooh, this is a tough one! I can’t pick just one but anything starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell, or Will Smith. I prefer comedies over any other genres because I like to be able to turn my mind off and just laugh for a couple hours.

“Go to” Quote or Mantra that Grounds You?

I am here now.

Accomplishment Are You Most Proud of?

Training for and completing my first triathlon last summer.

Best Lesson Learned in Life So Far?

Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind always.

Advice to Younger Self?

Liberate yourself by releasing your need to people please.

What Do You Love Best About Yourself (physical trait or personality characteristic) and Why?

I love that I am resilient. There have been many challenges in my life that could have defined and broken me, instead they taught me to rise up stronger and create a better life for myself.

Any Advice for Women Considering Joining the SheBreathes Collaborative?

We all bring something different to the studio, embrace that. There is no competition, only support as we all rise.

Any Message You Have for Our Community?

I’ve had a few role models growing up; my mom, God mother and Grandparents. They’ve influenced me by helping me to understand that life is not just black and white, not just up and down; it’s EVERYTHING in-between. My mom has always been very generous. My godmother is a national leader in the Dominican Republic. They’ve instilled in me that if you have a dream to make a difference, then life will make way to help you. Collectively, their efforts have taught me to be the best version of myself as possible!
